Privacy Policy

What this site collects, what it doesn't, and how analytics and advertising cookies work here.

Last updated: October 21, 2026

Open Data Canada (opendatacanada.ca) is a data journalism site. We do not require accounts and do not have comment sections. The site is supported by advertising, which is described below. This page describes the data handling that occurs.

The weekly newsletter

If you subscribe to the weekly email, we store your email address for one purpose: sending you that newsletter. Addresses are never sold, shared, or used for anything else. Every email includes a one-click unsubscribe link, which removes your address from the list immediately. Newsletter delivery is handled by Resend.

That is the only personal information the site collects directly.

Server logs and security

The site is served through Cloudflare, which processes IP addresses and request metadata to deliver pages and protect against abuse. Aggregate, non-identifying traffic statistics (page views, country-level visitor counts) are reviewed to understand which articles readers find useful. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.

Analytics

This site uses Google Analytics 4 to measure which pages are read and how visitors find the site. Google Analytics sets cookies and collects page views, approximate location, device and browser information. It does not collect names or email addresses. Learn more in Google's privacy policy and opt out with the Google Analytics opt-out add-on.

For visitors in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, analytics cookies are turned off. Google Analytics receives only cookie-free measurements from those visits until you accept analytics cookies in the consent banner.

Advertising

Open Data Canada is supported by advertising so the reporting can stay free to read. Ads are served by Google AdSense. Google and its advertising partners use cookies and similar technologies, and may collect information such as your IP address, approximate location, device and browser type, and the pages you view, to choose and measure ads and to detect invalid traffic. This includes showing ads based on your earlier visits to this site or other sites. Google's practices are described in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.

What we do not do. We do not sell your personal information ourselves. We do not run ads inside our charts, tables or newsletter signup form, and we do not accept sponsored articles disguised as editorial content. Ads are labelled "Advertisements".

Your choices.

  • Visitors in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland see a consent banner and can decline advertising cookies before any are set.
  • Elsewhere, including Canada, you can turn off personalized ads from Google in My Ad Center, opt out of interest-based advertising from other participating companies at Your Online Choices (Canada), or block cookies in your browser's settings.
  • Blocking or declining ad cookies does not stop the site from working, and does not change which articles or data you can read.

Interest-based advertising. Google and its partners may use data collected on this site, combined with data from other sites you visit, to show ads based on your interests. You can turn this off with the choices above. Contextual ads (matched to the page you are reading, not to your profile) may still appear.

Cookies

The site sets cookies from the following sources:

  • Google Analytics (measurement), described above.
  • Cloudflare (security).
  • Google AdSense and its advertising partners (advertising, measurement and fraud prevention), as described in the Advertising section.

The site sets no other cookies of its own.

Articles link to primary sources (Statistics Canada, open.canada.ca, and other public bodies) and occasionally to other publications. Their privacy practices are their own.
